Cholesterol – The Guidelines

When your cholesterol levels are checked, be sure to find out the actual numbers from your doctor, then get busy working on the numbers.  All of them have an impact on your heart health and all of them can be controlled by diet and other lifestyle changes.

Total cholesterol.……………200 or less
HDL cholesterol………………45+ for men, 60+ for women
LDL cholesterol……………….130 or less / 100 or less is ideal
Triglycerides…………………..125 or less
Ratios Total/HDL……………..4.5 or lower for men   /   4.0 or lower for women

  • HDL Power  – “good cholesterol”
    HDL is fantastic, because it helps keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries.
    Increase your HDL by walking or running at least 30 minutes three times a week, lose weight, consume Omega 3-rich foods such as salmon or walnuts.  Increase soluble fiber in your diet.
  • LDL Dangers – “bad cholesterol”
    The main source of cholesterol build-up and blockage in the arteries.  Decrease your LDL by following the TLC Diet* which is an eating plan for low-saturated fat, low-dietary cholesterol and increased soluble fiber.
  • Triglycerides – “fat”
    Do not consume more calories than you will are metabolizing or burning.  Excess calories regardless the source – carbs, fats or protein – will become triglycerides for storage as body fat. Cut back or eliminate sugary drinks such as sodas or fruit juice.  Increasing your activity and lowering your calories will bring the body into balance.
